Our lush green landscapes are absolutely lovely. But what really catches eyes and turns heads is a well-maintained pop of color.
If you really want your landscape to stand out this summer, consider adding some of these bright, heat-tolerant plants.
Bradenton Flower Beds
Let’s build our flower-ful landscape from the ground up. Starting at the smaller end of the spectrum, perennial flowers like lantana, pentas, and salvia are reliable Florida stalwarts.
If you want to focus on a single season’s worth of brilliance, periwinkle, zinnias, snapdragons, and torenia give you loads of color today with the promise of a clean canvas next year.
Flowering Shrubs and Bushes
To take up a little more space and add density to your landscape, you’ve got loads of flowering shrubs to choose from.
Nothing screams “tropical landscape” like hibiscus, while azalea and jasmine bring their own Southern charm as well as a dark green backdrop for their fragrant flowers. And you can’t help but marvel at the incredible, dense clusters of colorful flowers produced by bougainvillea.
Flowering Trees
There’s something magical about looking up and seeing some bright flowers framed by a blue Florida sky. And our trees around here put on a big show.
Southern traditionalists will swear by the sweet smell of a majestic magnolia in their yard, whereas more tropical-minded landscapers get a kick out of orchid trees and frangipani. Jacaranda are also a local favorite.
And then you’ve got crape myrtle. Talk about a showstopper. These persistent trees basically turn into flowers that cover their branches and flutter down like snow. (In fact, crape myrtle grow so well here that they do need consistent pruning to keep them in check.)
Colorful Landscaping Tips
And as you’re plotting your brilliant summer landscape with these flowering plants and/or others, here are some other tips to keep in mind.
Utilize Vertical Variety: People tend to focus on the ground-level layout of their landscape, but it’s also necessary to factor in plants of different heights.
Consider Color Coordinating: We love to see all kinds of color in all kinds of landscapes. But if you’re looking for something especially striking, while still keeping it neat, try limiting your landscaping palette.
Birds, Bees and Butterflies: Your landscape may be a feast for the eyes, but it’s a literal feast for local creatures. Keep them in mind, and consider adding a birdbath or water fountain that they can use on dryer days.
Mind Your Health in This Heat: Gardening, lawn care, and landscape maintenance in Bradenton summers are all hard work. Stay hydrated, take plenty of breaks in the shade, and avoid working outdoors between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Better still, hire a locally owned Bradenton landscaping company to do the work for you! We’re old pros at lawn care, and you get all the beauty and none of the heat stroke.
